Days N’ Daze – Show Me The Blueprints DEMOS

Days N’ Daze formed in 2008 in Houston and they play a mix of folk (yes folk) and crust, there is a weird and interesting combination in the same time, but hey this is music about, experiment to make something good. Show Me The Blueprints DEMOS will be out in May at our friends from SBAM Records and Flail Records. The band is signed with Fat Wreck and the original album was a blast for them. But as Jesse said: “For over a decade I recorded Days N’ Daze on a Tascam board through a single Sterling ST-55 with no DAW in a closet at my folks place in Houston, TX. I’ve never really known much about recording, mixing, and mastering. Always kinda just did what I could with what I had and understood to get a sound closest to what was in my head. Needless to say, flyin’ out to California to record an album for Fat Wreck Chords in an actual studio with computer screens, more than one mic, and someone who actually understands what all the little bips and bops on a soundboard mean was a pretty big step out of our comfort zone” so in short this version is one with the demos as they were recorded before the album was out on Fat. 15 tracks to listen loud and check them out HERE

The Roughneck Riot – Interview March 2022

Hey guys, here is a small interview with Roughneck Riot from UK, talk a bit about their new album Burn It To The Ground out now on Sbam Records, plans, influences and more.

Hi guys, how are you?

Hey MPTYZINE! We’re doing great, thanks. We’re currently recovering from a weekend of hometown shows! It’s been a while.

Congrats for the new album, Burn It To The Ground. How did come out, tell me the story.

Burn It To The Ground is our 4th studio album and it has been in the works for almost 8 years. We started writing new songs after our last release in 2014, but, due to a brief hiatus in 2019 and then the global pandemic, it’s been pushed back a lot. We even recorded the whole album back in 2018, but we thought we could make the songs better. So we put that on hold, rewrote some old songs, wrote some new ones and went back into the studio in 2020. We are super happy with how it has turned out, and the reception we have had so far is brilliant.

3. How are things with Sbam Records? they have a lot of cool bands

Yes, SBÄM have been excellent and they are adding brilliant bands to their roster almost every week so it’s great to be a part of it. We’ve been aware of SBÄM for a long time; Stefan even designed one of our tour posters back in 2014.4. Tell me a short history of the band

We started in 2005 playing Rancid covers and some originals that were very ‘street’ punk. We matured a little bit, dropped the Rancid covers, strengthened the line-up and then added the folk instrumentation; the sound then grew bigger and better, now here we are 17 years later!

What are your main influences, i know that is folk and punk but is more than that, tell me about your crazy mix, that os awseome

The main influence on our lyrics is a fervent distaste for our corrupt government, of injustices and crises at home and round the world, and, over the last few years, introspection. As for our music style, we all grew up listening to punk music, then through a phase of listening to folk punk, and then just folk in general. We all try to influence the songwriting with our own personal tastes, too. Individually, we enjoy pop-punk, folk, punk-rock, and this is evident through the songs on Burn It To The Ground.

Talking about influences, make me a top10 of your favorite artists/bands

We all have different tastes, especially now we’re in our 30s, but our communal top 10 would probably look something like this:

Bad Religion, Against Me!, Joe Strummer and the Mescaleros, NOFX, Crazy Arm, Descendents, Green Day, Hot Water Music, Tom Waits, Dick Gaughan.

If there is an oportunity for a split ep with a dream band that you want to play, what band/artist will be?

It’d be great to do a split with a band who no longer write music like The Clash or The Pogues. We have talked a lot about doing a split with our very good friends who play in a ska-punk band in the UK called Faintest Idea. That’d be a great mix.

How were the things for you in the crazy pandemy?

Things were very quiet for a while: no gigs, no practise, no fun! But, as the restrictions were lifted, we managed to get into the studio for around 35 days over 3 to 4 months and record and produce the new album which was great.

Now that we are getting slowly back to “normal” what are the plans? touring maybe?

Yes, we have a 9-date tour in France in March, we play some festivals over the summer, like SBÄM Festival, and then another tour through Germany in August. We also have some shows around the UK, too. There’s a lot of catching up to do.

Where people can find you online to listen and buy your music?

The new (and old) albums are all available on streaming sites such as iMusic, YouTube and Spotify. You can also buy the new album from SBÄM Records!

For our few readers online, please spread some nice words

It’s hard to find nice words when the whole world is going to shit, but stay sane, surround yourself with good people, the sun will shine again.

Thanks for your time and if you have something else to add please do it

We’d love to come out to Romania soon! So, please get in touch at roughneckriotuk@gmail.com to book some shows!

Bridge City Sinner – Exclusive interview mptyzine Sept. 2021

Hey guys, MirceONE here, we have been away for some time (work and stuff…you know) but thanks to Felix from Flix Records and Libby, Michael and all Sinners we have something new for you guys. Here is a short talk with the Sinners, about their last work. Cheers

1. Hi guys this is Mirceone from mptyzine, how are you?

Libby:

I’m good! We’re getting so close to back on the road it’s like the minutes are passing like hours. I’m sure I can speak for everyone here when I say we live for playing shows. I don’t know what to compare it to but it’s basically the meaning of life haha.

2. First of all congrats for the single and tell me if there will be an album soon?

Libby:

Thank you! And yes, August 20th is the official release date (I think by the time this comes out, it will be released)!!! We’ve been working so hard, much like everyone else, on trying to make something out of all this down time. I think it’s safe to say this is our most realized version of ourselves that we’ve been able to create. Having the time to really focus our efforts is showing. Maybe we should put this much work into all our albums haha. Luke (our violin player) did a great job producing it, so it sounds a little more cohesive than we have before, and working with Jesse at Lowshelf Recording is always a great time. He’s a real blast to be around.

3. For those who don’t know you, can you tell us few things? how it all started?

Libby:

We’ve all been playing music on the street for years. Each one of us has our own unique background, but I think it all has revolved around folk music and being involved in punk scenes. We’ve definitely gone through a few lineup changes but we still have 3 of the original members and luckily added Luke (fiddle) and Clyde(banjo) to add to it all musicality. I’d say it started in the streets and traveling.

4. I know that this is not my grandpa type of folk…so what is? what you guys are playing?:)

Libby:

It’s is my favorite and least favorite part of the band, defining what music we play. It’s not traditional folk music, It’s definitely not punk music, sure as hell isn’t jazz, it’s not metal, it’s really no one thing for sure. It makes it a pain in the ass when people haven’t heard of us and you have to describe it, but that also means we’re touching on something not a lot of people have done before. I think we’re getting lumped into a genere with acts like Amigo The Devil, Harley Poe, and Tejon Street Corner Thieves that people are starting to call Murder Folk. Whether or not we think that describes us it doesn’t matter cause that’s just what people are gonna call it haha.

5. Tell me few things about your influences

Michael:

Oh, boy where to start. I hate when people say they like every kind of music because I definitely don’t, but we have a wide breadth of influence for sure. I mean most of us grew up listening to punk, screamo, classic rock, whatever you lump The White Stripes into. But most of us, not all of us, got into folk music later in life when we started idealizing traveling by alternative means and watching “O Brother Where Art Thou”. So now it’s everything from classic punk, to black metal (not the racist stuff), to 30’s jazz, classic blues, pop country, pop music in general, and honestly a lot of influence comes from our peers and bands we play with.

6. Talking about influences, make me please a top 10 best bands/artists

Michael:

Ah way to put me on the spot this is gonna be hard. I will say this is off the cuff, and in no way in order. But I’ve been on a calypso kick (thanks Aydin) so I’m gonna start with:

1. Wilmouth Houdini

2. Profane Sass

3. Dirty Kid Discount

4. Cab Calloway

5. Amigo The Devil

6. Lady Gaga

7. Brooks and Dunn

8. Hank Sr

9. Window Smashing Job Creators

10. Harlem Hamfats

7. what does the future holds? where you guys will play soon?

Libby:

Oh baby, this is the best part. We’re starting off in our hometown with a sold out show in Portland, Oregon, headed to Vegas for Psycho Fest, hitting some of the Great Lakes with Bongzilla, then headed down to the greatest festival in the world Muddy Roots! The rest of the year we’ll be hitting spots all over the US with Days N Daze and Crazy and The Brains. We are planning on making it over to Europe sometime in the Summer 2022 and hopefully Canada in Early 2022.

9. How are things going at Flail Records?

Michael:

It’s CRAZY. For those of you who do not know, Flail Records was an idea the Sinners had and started about three years ago.The amount of support we’ve gotten is beyond words. There’s employees now, packages are going out daily, it’s overwhelming at times. Scott is really the band member that has grown the little baby from the ground up (and runs it). He’s put in probably thousands of hours if not tens of thousands into every aspect of running a business and label. It was basically a two man show for a long time. Just Scott and Lyz (Scott’s sibling) in the basement for hours and hours. We definitely all help out and put all our other projects like Lightnin’ Luke, Clyde and the Milltailers, and King Strang on the label. It’s really grown into its own monster at this point.

10. Hey, now without google, tell me what do you know about Romania or Eastern Europe?

Michael:

Oh wow I’m gonna look like an asshole here so I’m gonna keep it brief. All I know is there’s good music and a tumultuous history haha. Oh and I love the architecture too. I’m really hoping we make it out there someday.

11. Few words for our few readers:)

Michael:

Keep on sinnin’ 👍🏽😎👍🏽

12. Where can people listen to your music?

Libby:

Wherever they currently listen to music. Spotify for most people out here, YouTube works too, if you don’t have either of those thing and you prefer it old fashioned we just teamed up with SBÄM Records for all our European stuff so you can buy records there or through Merch Arsenal Europe to save on shipping instead of ordering from Flail!

13. Thank you for your time, please if you want to add something else.

Libby:

I think that about covers it! Thanks for talking to us, stay safe out there, don’t forget to bring a mask! Love y’all xoxo

MirceONE vs. Libby/Michael – Sept. 2021.

Days N Daze – Interview – December 2020

Hi guys, here is an interview with Days N Daze. The interview will be published in our new number coming out this December. Thanks!

1. Hey guys, this is MirceONE from mptyzine, how are you?

J: Doin’ well all things considered!! Home with the family just takin’ it one day at a time.

2. First of all for those who dont know the band, can you make a short story for us?

J: Whitney (the trumpet player), and I moved from our hometown of Houston TX to a little college town called San Marcos TX when she was 18 and I was 16. Unless you enjoy keg parties or you’re attending the university there’s not a whole lot to do in San Marcos so we started writin’ songs as a way to fight the boredom. We decided we wanted to try n play a show at a coffee shop called Wake The Dead down the street from our apartment so we thought we should probably have a band name. Days N Daze was literally the first thing we thought of so we went with that and just never stopped.

3. How was the collaboration with Andrew Paley of the new split?

J: It was great fun!! Andrew and his team were super helpful with lyrics n chords n all that. I’d never heard any of Andrew’s music prior to covering “Caroline” and now I jam his stuff all the time!!

4. Days n Daze has a strong diy ethic, and i saw in your songs a lot of themes such as: anarchism, environmental issues and more. What is the message of the band?

J: I’ve never really thought about what our message is overall. We kinda just write about whatever we’re feeling in that moment. We’ve got a bunch of music that just documents the relationship between Whit and I. From being close as kids to growing apart to becoming friends again. We’ve got a lot of songs about addiction and mental health. Got a few songs about how freeing it is to just hit the road and head towards something new. I guess if I had to pick out the most reoccurring themes they’d be mental health, unity, adventure, and love.

5. How the pandemic is so far, how much impacted the scene and your lifes?

J: Covid has pretty much brought our lives to a grinding halt. We had so much planned before quarantine that we were so excited about and now, of course, everything has had to be pushed back so it’s super stagnant right now. At least we can play live stream shows and keep in touch with people through the internet though. Just tryin’ to focus on the projects we can work on while in one place. Been recording for my other project, Escape from the ZOO, Whit has been recording some solo stuff as well. We just released that split with Andrew Paley. So just keepin’ busy and goal oriented. Idle hands, ya know?

6. Please name a top 10 of your bands that influenced you somehow

J: 1. Leftover Crack
2. Watsky
3. Sum 41
4. The Ramones
5. Night Gaunts
6. Mischief Brew
7. We The Heathens
8. Pat the bunny
9. No Cash
10. No Service Project

7. What the future holds for the band?

J: Mainly we just wanna get back to playin’ shows so a soon as it’s safe for everyone we’ll be back on the road!! We’re always writin’ so we’re gonna let our last full length, Show Me The Blueprints, marinate a while longer and then we’ll get back to recording new stuff. Supposed to be on the European leg of the next Punk In Drublic tour so that’s super exciting!! Not sure when that’ll end up happening, but super stoked for it!!

8. After this pandemic will be over, you guys want to kick the road again in tours?

J: Definitely!! The stream shows are a good holdover, but nothin’ compares to a real, in person, live show. Can’t wait to walk back into a venue and feel that energy vibratin’ through the building and the crowd.

9. Tell me if you guys ever played in Eastern and Central Europe, or if you know something about Romania ?

J: I think the closest we’ve gotten is maybe Croatia. I’m always kinda lost when we’re in Europe though. I just get in the van and get out wherever we stop.
Admittedly, I don’t know much about Romania. I know y’all got Transylvania, right? Old castles and churches. Seems like a gorgeous place. If ya wanna drop some facts on me I’d love to learn!!

10. Name in 5 words the philosophy of the band.

J: Dreams, screams, love, and fun.

11. Thanks for your time, please let us know where can people can download and listen to your music?

J: Thank YOU!! Had a good time goin’ through these. Great questions!! We’ve got music up at daysndaze.bandcamp.com, we’re on Spotify and itunes and all that jazz, we got physical copies up at flailrecords.com or eu.kingsroadmerch.com if you’re in Europe (to save ya on shipping costs), and hit up daysndaze.net for lyrics and news n whatnot if ya like!!

12. Last words leave them to you, a few words for our few people online..

J: If ya made it this far thanks so much for readin’!! Hope you’re doin’ great all things considered, hope you’re bein’ kind to yourself both mentally and physically, and if ya need anything please don’t hesitate to ask!!

Thanks to Felix and Jesse.

Andrew Paley / Days N Daze split 7 news

Andrew Paley has a new video from the album “Scattered Light” and has a new split 7 with Days N Daze (yea, the folk punks from Fat Wreck). The new video “Sequels” is an interesting project video, where he is using Wav2Lip with a nice collage of 80’s film classics. Days N Daze are covering the song Caroline and the 7 inch is available thru SBÄM and Flail Records.

Here is what Andrew is saying about the technical part of the video:

Andrew: First, the slightly technical background, though a simplified version: I leveraged a model that had been trained in a generative adversarial network (GAN) architecture. It’s a now-common approach to training generative models that involves two competing models — one that creates (the generator) and one that judges the output of the generator as passable or not (the discriminator). These two models play off each other until the generator is capable of reliably creating “passable” work. More specifically, there has been much research into lip re-syncing in videos over the past few years, but previous techniques either required the model be trained on the face it’s trying to re-animate and/or didn’t do very well with arbitrary moving images. Recent research — as in the past few months — has yielded a model that actually can pull off re-animating arbitrary faces in videos pretty well, and it’s called Wav2Lip. Reading about it piqued my curiosity, so I thought I’d see what I could do with it.

So, the inputs to the model are an audio file (the track of my singing from the song) and a video file (the face of a person that I’d like to reanimate to appear as though they were singing the words), and the output is the re-render of their face synced to my singing. To get the video as it is, I mined movies from the late 80s through early 00s that left a mark on me growing up, and pieced slices of scenes together to create a visual that matched the song — and then I went slice by slice reprocessing the faces to match the lyrics. There was an enormous amount of experimentation — lots of videos/inputs required tweaking and some just simply didn’t work for various reasons — but it was a really interesting foray into a pretty fascinating space

Here is the artwork and the video for Sequels and the lyric video for Caroline are bellow.

Stoj Snak is coming back with the 2nd LP after 4 years Life, Death and Everything in Between that will be released on 23rd October 2020. It is sad and happy in the same time, full of optimism and made from the heart, honest, the album has 12 tracks and is available as pre order on Bandcamp with various packages, from cd, tape, vinyl, t shirts, tote bags and more, make sure to check their website for more. Also check the amazing animated video for Bliss Point below. Cheers.

It takes courage to die for your ideals but dedication to live by them

Stoj Snak – 1000 Daisies EP

MPTY ZINE promo for Romania.

Stoj Snak is back with a new piece of EP with 3 tracks, 1000 Daisies. The EP was released on 19 September 2018 and is a fund raiser to save the venue 1000Fryd in Aalborg in Denmark. About his music we did write a few years ago when materials like: ScreamerSongwriter (LP) and Happitalism (EP) were released. This EP keeps the same sincerity and simplicity like the previous materials, the same folk-punk, acoustic package, the same open heart for who ever is there to listen. Has the same energy and screams, the same punk DIY attitude and goes to tell the things in your face. It’s political, it’s about world, it’s true and goes to your heart. A really good job from Niels and we are expecting the LP. My favorite on this EP: Bitter Place. More infos here: https://stojsnak.bandcamp.com/

Tracklist:
1. 1000 Daisies
2. Election Night
3. Bitter Place
